Library Building Improvements

A place like Camas Public Library is what makes a good community great. It provides a meeting space for friends, families, and organizations to come together, and offers enrichment in the form of classes and clubs to help community members stretch their minds and meet their neighbors.

Above all, the Library is a place for people to learn or sharpen their literacy skills and be transported to different worlds through reading. This benefits the community as well. Imagine a community without reading:

  • Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the fourth grade will end up incarcerated or on public assistance (National Assessment of Adult Literacy), and if a student is unable to read well by third grade, studies show they’re more likely to drop out of high school (KUOW).

  • People with poor literacy skills are more than two times as likely to be unemployed (World Literacy Foundation).

  • Studies show that becoming immersed in fiction increases empathy toward others (National Library of Medicine).

It’s been 24 years since the Library's last renovation was designed, and the population of Camas has more than doubled. It's time for our beloved Library to receive a little TLC! Slated to begin in January 2025 and wrap up just before summer, the small-scale renovation will focus on exterior upgrades including a new courtyard, interior lighting, and the Children's Library.
