Second Story Gallery Exhibits “Roots of a Movement: Denis Hayes, Camas, and Earth Day”
The Camas Public Library is proud to announce its upcoming exhibit, Roots of a Movement: Denis Hayes, Camas, and Earth Day, opening in the Second Story Gallery, Friday, April 4. This special exhibit, presented in collaboration with the Camas Earth Day Society, will explore the origins of Earth Day and the pivotal role played by Camas native Denis Hayes in launching the environmental movement that continues to shape the world today.
Denis Hayes, a key organizer of the first Earth Day in 1970, has been instrumental in advocating for environmental awareness and action. The exhibit will tell the story of how Earth Day began, highlight Hayes’ contributions, and showcase the lasting impact of this global movement. Featuring historical photographs and interpretive displays, Roots of a Movement will connect visitors with the spirit of activism and environmental stewardship that Earth Day represents. Denis Hayes has previewed the exhibition and been supportive throughout the process of developing it.
“We are thrilled to bring this exhibit to the Camas community,” said Connie Urquhart, Director of the Camas Public Library. “Denis Hayes’ legacy is a testament to the power of local voices creating global change, and we hope this exhibit inspires visitors to engage with environmental issues in meaningful ways.”
The exhibit will be open to the public April 4-28 during regular library hours. The opening reception with be Friday, April 4, 5-8 p.m.
On Wednesday, April 9 at 6 p.m., the Library will present the event: An Evening with Denis Hayes: The Legacy of Earth Day and Environmentalism in Camas presented by Camas Earth Day Society. This engaging discussion will explore the legacy of Denis Hayes, a Camas native and key organizer of the first Earth Day, and how he inspired the creation of the Camas Earth Day Society and its mission to promote environmental stewardship in our community. The event will culminate with a special question and answer session with Hayes, via Zoom.
