Kids Learning About 9/11

My daughter was born on September 11, 2012. Since around six years of age, my husband and I have been helping her to learn that, while 9/11 is a day of celebration in our family, for many people it is a day of sadness. On one hand I feel like she is too young to learn about the 9/11 tragedy, but on the other hand we want her to be educated about it so that she won’t be surprised when she hears about it from another source.

Here are some online articles that helped us craft our conversation with her:

How to Talk to Kids About Difficult Subjects from Common Sense Media.

5 Ways to Make Tough Conversations with Kids Easier from Parents Magazine.

7 Things to Keep in Mind When Talking to Kids About Tough Subjects from the Washington Post.

Here are the children’s books we chose to read to her:

America Is Under Attack by Don Brown.

What Were the Twin Towers? By Jim O’Connor.

Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman.
